D-Link DGS 1216T - Switch - 16 ports - EN, Fast EN, Gigabit EN - 10Base-T, 100Ba

The DGS-1216T Smart Switch presents a cost-effective solution for the small and medium business to economically implement high-speed Gigabit packet switching with easy fine tuning of network performance and security. This switch comes with 16 copper Gigabit ports and 2 combo SFP (Mini GBIC) for fiber connection. Port trunks are provided for server deployment and network backbone attachment, while functions important for bandwidth-intensive applications such as Priority Queues and VLANs are supported to enable you to implement Quality of Service (QoS) and security without having to go through complex network management usually found in other managed switches. 16 copper Gigabit ports provide an inexpensive alternative solution to fiber-optic. Using your existing low-cost Cat. 5 copper twisted-pair wires as the transmission media, these ports allow you to instantly upgrade to Gigabit capability without requiring you to install new, expensive fiber cables. All ports support plug-and-play connections with auto-sensing of 10/100/1000Mbps network speeds, full/half duplex auto negotiation and MDI/MDIX cross over. Gigabit ports can be combined together to create multi-link load-sharing aggregated bandwidths to a server or a network backbone. To expand the network, you can also make use of the port trunks to eliminate bottlenecks between the cascaded switches. The switch support VLANs to let you improve security and bandwidth utilization by limiting the broadcast domains and confining intra-group traffic within their segments. To segment up the network, VLAN-supported workstations and servers that are connected to the switch can be grouped into different Virtual LANs (VLANs). The switch supports not only Layer 2 802.1p Priority Queue control, but also other ways to prioritize network packets. Classification of users data priorities can be based on a data packet Priority Queue or the TOS field in the IP header. This QoS function support allows you to run bandwidth-intensive/delay-sensitive applications and to attach video servers to the switch for video conference. VLANs for Enhanced Security & Performance.

How To Prevent Virus Attack On Your Computer

Submitted By: James Wallis

The threat of viruses cannot be underestimated by any individual or business. They can strike anywhere, anytime when you are least expecting them and throw a spanner in your works.

What are Computer Viruses?

Computer viruses are actually small software programmes written with malicious intent. They are tailor-made to spread automatically from one computer to another through a variety of means. Once they reach a computer, they immediately create many versions of themselves and infect a lot of files.

Viruses are written by people who are either software engineers or know programming languages. Often, these are young teenagers still studying computer science in colleges who are just doing it for fun or trying to impress their friends with their intellect and competence.

How do Viruses Spread?

Not very long ago, floppy disk was the only way we could transfer data files from one computer to another. Therefore, this was the only media available to viruses for travelling in cyber-space. Now, digital media used for transferring files has multiplied. Apart from floppy disks ? which are now almost obsolete ? there are optical disks (including compact disks and digital video disks) as well as USB Flash drives used for transferring data. Apart from these, emails are the main carriers of digital files today over long distances.

In the modern world, the Internet has been a great boon. It is an international network made up of old-fashioned copper wires, fibre-optic cables as well as micro-wave and satellite links that connects almost all computers of the world. We can use it to browse millions of Websites, download useful information as well as send emails and pictures to friends, relatives and business contacts far and wide.

Internet has also emerged as the ideal vehicle that viruses use to spread themselves worldwide in a matter of days. Indeed, today most viruses are introduced to your computer through the Internet. Emails are the main culprit. What happens is that a virus residing in your computer automatically accesses your email address book, attaches itself to emails and starts sending them to everyone in your email database without your getting to know about it.

When the recipients see your email, they click on it and their computer becomes infected with the virus too. The latter then plays out the same game with the new computer and sends itself to every address in its email list. This is like a chain reaction whose shock-wave encompasses millions of computers.

Apart from email, viruses can enter your computer when you browse websites. The latter may have some hidden viruses and other troublesome software such as spyware. When you click on a link, a virus may get activated and download itself onto your computer hard disk.

Trojans are a version of computer viruses. Like the proverbial Trojan horse, these hide themselves inside harmless-looking files such as digital pictures, greeting cards, video clips and audio files. When you download any of these onto your computer, the hidden virus comes alive and starts infecting your hard disk.

Viruses can damage your computer in different ways. Some of these are just nuisance-creators, like, for example, a virus forcing you to press a particular keyboard button every five minutes if you want to continue working. But many are deadly in their effect and try to wipe your hard disk clean of all data.

Anti-Virus Vaccine

Every year, viruses are responsible for massive damage in terms of lost data and the money spent by individuals and businesses in trying to recover that data. Companies suffer immense financial setbacks if they are unable to recover their critical files. That is why most countries in the world have laws that mandate strict punishments for anyone found responsible for creating computer viruses and injecting them into cyber-space.

In the last few decades, an entire new industry has cropped up that specialises in anti-virus software products. Called virus vaccines, these are meant to be loaded onto your hard disk. Whenever you boot up your computer, this software gets activated and keeps an eye on your files. It does not allow you to download any file or open any website link before it has first vetted it to see if it is not hiding a dangerous virus. This makes your computer quite safe.

Also, the anti-virus software periodically scans your entire hard drive to check for viruses. Newer viruses are getting created every day. Therefore, the anti-virus software keeps downloading newer virus definitions from its company website so that your computer protection remains up to date.

AI Decision Computers to Construct and Deconstruct Solution Answers by Data Sets for Humans

In the future artificial intelligent computers will make decisions in business, government and even in the military. But how will the humans come to trust these artificial intelligence supercomputers and the solutions that they provide or the decisions that they make?

Mankind is a rather egocentric species and for a human to commit an action based on what a computer tells them to do might be a little tough and take a little bit of getting used to. Nevertheless artificial intelligent decision computers will construct and deconstruct solutions in order to put the humans at ease.

Humans will ask these artificially intelligent supercomputers how they came to a decision. The answer alone may not be enough. Some might say that people trust calculators and therefore they will trust the decisions of artificial intelligent computers and yet that may not be the case all the time.

For an artificial intelligent computer to really do a good job in decision-making it will have to put its human counterpart at ease and show them how IT came to the decision and break it down into pieces. Eventually the humans will come to trust the artificial intelligent computers, but until then humans will be demanding more answers in the form of more questions.

Humans will want to see the data sets and a deconstructed decision-making process in a format they can understand and this too will be a challenge for artificial intelligent computer software designers. I certainly hope this article is of interest and that is has propelled thought. The goal is simple, to help you in your quest to be the best in 2007. MMORPG: The new trend in computer gaming

From the firsts bar gaming machines like pacman or pong to the current computers or console games like The Sims 2 or Halo enormous steps forward have been made, up to the point that it is difficult to consider the latters just as a natural evolution of the firsts. But that is the real truth, the wonderful masterpieces the videogames industry is able to produce nowadays are nothing more than the results of a slow work made of tiny improvements that in the years brought up to those results.

If we check the differences between today's and ten years ago videogames, the most obvious ones are in the graphics. Graphic cards with always more powerful GPUs (Graphical Processing Unit) and more memory have made possible the modeling of three dimensional fantastic alive worlds.
But graphics are not certainly everything. Also the whole concepts and actions that constitute the game itself, the gameplay, have been notably deepened and improved. And so the two white bars at the edges of the screen hitting the ball as fast and diagonally as possible disappears, while adventures with deep plots, arcades in which being able to coordinate movements and hiding at the right moment is as important as firing with an excellent aim, together with games where more than one players fight or cooperate for a common objective are born.

Oh yes, multiplayer games. Since 1999, year of release of a cult in the multiplayer genre like Unreal Tournament, the phenomena became a mass one, so that it gave life to a new word, netgamer.
And obviously the videogame industry hasn't ignored the phenomena and started to work.
But already two years before Unreal Tournament, the US based corporation "Origin" released what at the moment was the diamond edge in the multiplayer field, Ultima Online.

Set in an ancient Britannia, lands of dragons, wizards and knights, the Ultima Online servers were (and still are) capable of hosting in the same world more that one thousand players. And here is how the multiplayer gaming genre goes from a last hit battle between two six-people teams to much more, a "real breathing virtual world" with its society, its ecosystem, its economy, and all of this on its player's hands.
Thousands of players creating guild and alliances or declaring war each other for resources control or simply to defend their own or plunder others richness was something absolutely new. And fun.
To define the new game genre that Ultima Online made famous, the MMORPG term was created, acronym of Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game, where massive refers to the amount of players concurrently playing together.

Ultima Online was followed by many more games of success, like EVE Online, World of Warcraft, Dark Age of Camelot, City of Heroes, Star Wars Galaxies, Guild Wars, Planetside and so on. Eve Online is even capable of servicing on its server about 30.000 players at the same time, while World of Warcraft distributed between a few hundred servers more than 7 millions players all around the world.

Today specialized websites like OGRank.com covers the topic, addressing the new players to the MMORPG that fits best for them and servicing resources and news to the more expert ones.
