Computer and Video Games Can Create World Leaders

Computer and Video games have the world enthralled. Adults and young ones are hooked to the fast paced mind absorbing thrills a game offers. What is more gaming has donned a new mantle and gamers can now play with teams and opponents from all over the world creating a fertile environment of exchange of thoughts, beliefs, and developments.

Significant developments in gaming have resulted in games becoming much more than entertainment they have metamorphosed into training tools that fine tune and create skilled professionals and leaders.

Leaders who spend a life time in studying learning through game playing in top universities like Wisconsin found that:

? Games enhance problem solving abilities.

? Players take on different personas and so learn to shoulder different loyalties in gaming. In becoming a hero or warlord the player is constantly challenged and has to think on his toes. Problem solving abilities are greatly sharpened.

? Since games are interactive, players have to face immediately the consequences of actions and when backed against a wall need to find ways to escape or overcome problems.

? Games teach skills of co-ordination, team work, team spirit, and lateral thinking.

? War games like Full Spectrum Warrior promote military life and teach lay persons what life in the armed forces is like.

? There are games that hone communication skills, enhance comprehension, and teach reading skills. These are valuable learning tools that take learning away from being hum drum to exciting. Players actually look forward to playing and the absorption in gaming leads to unconscious learning.

According to personnel managers play and learn session?s help adults become more effective managers and decision makers. Gaming rewards players who are successful with promotions to the next level. Mentally rewards are like lollipops and the person is encouraged to succeed and this forms a stimulus that jerks a person from lethargy or complacency. Video and computer gaming have become integral to leadership development programs in: Bombardier Inc; Ontario Power Generation Inc; the Rotman school of Management; the Kellogg school of Management; The UN; and the US Navy.

Computer and Video games are fast changing the way people learn. And, their very nature permits creativity as well as advance planning skills. All the qualities required in leadership can be acquired through sensible gaming. A word of caution, gaming can be harmful too. One needs to use gaming positively and keep away from its negative effects. Games according to experts are perfect learning tools as they promote leaning by action and not rote.

Disadvantages of Computers in the Classroom

To start the most significant fact that should be stated is that the computer is a tool, and as with any educational tool, from books to crayons, it can be used to enhance the curriculum and promote learning, but it can also be misused and abused. In this essay, I will discuss the disadvantages of having computers in the classrooms due to the misuse and the abuse of this tool.

I found it hard to find research that had been done on this topic because not only is the research on the effectiveness of computers in the classroom scarce but the research that is there is often done by software companies and therefore may be biased. (Emmans 2001). Even though there is no clear-cut answer to the question of a computer being a friend or foe in the classroom, having an unsolvable question of good or bad brings many issues to light. For example, the fact that much of the software designed for children is appealing to them. If nothing else, it at least holds the children's attention. Though this may seem like a positive characteristic, consider this, just because a television show holds your attention, does it necessarily educate you? The answer to this is simple, maybe some do, but certainly not all do, mostly they are just simply entertaining. This causes me to raise an eyebrow at some, not all, software. As a teacher, one must not use time-fillers, cause a child can watch television or play on a computer at home, but as a teacher, we must educate, and if there is no educational value in the software, what good is it for a teacher? On the defense for teachers, another reason for computers being a shortcoming is that sometimes the software is not obvious that it is non-educational. This can be a common mistake of any educator, being fooled that a product could be educational when it is merely entertainment software dressed up in an educational costume aimed at these gullible teachers.

According to Cindy C. Emmans (2001), a professor of Educational Technology at Central Washington University, on software in the classroom...

" Often feedback is the key to learning, and computers are appealing because this feedback can be immediate, which is of course a very effective learning tool. Unfortunately, this feedback is not often as effective as it might be, perhaps because it is not easy to return to the original question to try again, or the student must begin at the beginning to review the original content rather then backing up a step or two. In some cases, the feedback for the wrong answers is more appealing than that for the right answer, causing students to try and get the wrong answer simply for the entertainment value".

Gerald W. Bracey sums it up adequately in a journal article called Principal by basically saying that the bells and whistles are all there, but the education is not, because it was not produced by someone who understands how children learn. (1996, p.6).

More arguments in the research area continued in September of 2000, the Alliance for Childhood published a statement against the use of computers in schools. More than 85 experts in various fields including psychiatry, education, and philosophy signed the statement in which calls for a suspension on the promoting introduction of computers into the nation's elementary schools until there is a more careful assessment of their effect (Hafner, 2000). Another influence in opposition to computers in classrooms is that of Jane Healy, an educational psychologist and the author of "Failure to Connect," a book criticizing educational applications of computers. Thomas Crampton interviewed Mrs. Healy and she declared that computers "can hurt children's personal skills, work habits concentration, motivation, (and) the development of social skills" (IHT, October 2000, p. 19).

Another reason that computers in the classroom would prove to be a disadvantage is the availability of computers in the classroom to each individual student. It is rare to find a school that, in each classroom, has a computer supplied for each student. This then brings up the problem of scheduling and rotating the students to the computers available. (Tiene 2001) This begins a whole new ball game in which you are now consuming a lot of time in which could be used for more productive measures rather then scheduling computer time for each student. If this is the case, and only a specific amount of students can be on the computer at one time, then you are dividing your classroom, and not integrating it, as it should be. This causes many difficulties in teaching a whole group instruction, which leads to problems in skill development, since the attention of some students is lacking. (Tiene 2001).
On the Colorado state education web site (2003), I was able to find questions that were asked to teachers regarding computers in their classrooms. The teachers were asked, "What do you find unattractive about teaching in a computer based classroom?" The one teacher commented that, " Students have a tendency to come in a print out their papers at the beginning of class instead of coming into class with a hard copy..." Another teacher said, " Technological difficulty, your whole lesson could be shot for the day if the computer would go down". When the teachers were asked about the difficulties they faced themselves and with the students due to computers in the classroom, they answered, " It is hard to get the students attention when they are on the computers." Another teacher commented, " There are times that I send them to work and instead they are interacting with each other." Another teacher stated her fear of the computer classroom by saying that, " Students are at their own screens, they're in their own little world, and they are not talking to their classmates, sometimes I think that they don't even know half the names of all the people in their class." (Barnes 2003) I feel that these teachers comments are very important when looking at the issue of computers in the classrooms, because these are the people that actually interact with the children in the classroom, they are not just some random research study by a software company, these people are the real thing, and they see how computers are effecting their classrooms.

Another issue of computers in the classrooms regards the child's health. If a child were to be functioning on a computer for a long interlude of time or with incorrect positioning they will inadvertently obstruct their own health, some problems caused from this include muscular-skeletal injuries and vision problems. (MacArthur & Shneiderman, 1986).

Another issue concerning computer use in classrooms is that a lot of teachers have not been trained to use a computer, and many do not know how. An enormous amount of time would have to be consumed for the teachers to learn both the hardware and the software of the computer. They also would need time to collaborate with other teachers. Time is something that many teachers spend planning lessons and the weekly events of their classroom. The other problem that was just mentioned was the training of the teachers. Some educators do not have local training options available to them. Some do not have the time or money to spend on it. Another issue is that even if a teacher does go through training, there are always unsuspected things that can go wrong with a computer. If a teacher were to base their whole lesson on a computer, and it were to crash, and the teacher just being minimally skilled in using computers, would not be able to fix the system so that they could continue their lesson. (Tiene 2001).Therefore an on-site technology expert would be needed on site at all times in case any of these incidences would happen, and quite frankly I do not think that there are too many school districts looking for another expense.
Another reason for computers being a disadvantage in the classroom is that if the computer is Internet accessible, if this is the case, then the children can be exposed to Internet content that is not appropriate for their age level. They can also be exposed to child predators, which is a huge concern in today's world.
Though this may seem far-fetched it truly is not in an article published on the gurdian angel websitein 2000 states,
"The facts are plain. Children are being targeted, solicited, and made victims by pedophiles. What do the ratios or statistics matter? Isn't even one too many? These predators range from the simple minded closet pedophile who has surfaced because they believe they are safely anonymous behind their account alias, to the highly organized and skilled child pornography rings that operate predominantly off of US soil, behind quick discard web sites, and anonymous re-mailers, pushing their hideous wares for big profits. Have you ever heard of a child being molested or kidnapped in your hometown? Don't you teach your kids to watch for certain things and, not to talk to, or go anywhere with, strangers for just that reason? This is our point. Just as there are real world lessons that you teach your children, there is a necessity to teach them cyber-world lessons. " (Hook, 2000).
To put this quite simply, are you sure that your child is being watched very closely when accessing the Internet at school? It sure would be hard for one teacher to keep a close eye on each individual student in the classroom when they are all accessing the Internet at the same time. Therefore are you, as a parent or a teacher, really quite sure that a computer is necessary to learn in school? I mean, didn't you, the parent or teacher, learn in school without the computer? I agree that learning the latest technology is a necessity, but I do not agree with using computers for classes like mathematics or reading.
To sum it all up, Computers in the classroom lacks research of it being an advantage in the classroom. Computers in the classroom may not provide the students with the proper education that they need if the software being used is not adequate. Computers may not be, depending on the school, made available to each student. The attention of the students is harder to get when they are on the computer. An inexperienced teacher in the technology area may cause many problems in the classroom, and consume valuable time that could be used to educate. Most schools do not provide an on site technician in case a difficulty may arise. The children's health may be affected by long-term use of the computers, and probably the most frightening one is that these children can be exposed to child predators and unfiltered inappropriate content through the web while they are in school and in their classrooms presumed to be receiving their education.

Allied Telesis AT FS232 - Media converter - 10Base-T, 100Base-FX, 100Base-TX - R

When upgrading your traditional 10Mbps Ethernet network or extending your 100Mbps Fast Ethernet network, switches are required, the AT-FS232 switch provides the ideal solution. The AT-FS232 will connect any two copper networks - irrespective of speed, and allow any copper network to be extended over a Fast Ethernet fiber link up to distances of 100km. Many new backbone switch products now support the industry standard IEEE 802.1Q specification for VLANs (Virtual LANs), which requires extra long data packets to be sent on the network. The AT-FS232 switch has been designed to be fully compatible with these long packets, allowing them to be used in modern networks. Switches not supporting this feature will discard these extra long packets, making them unsuitable for modern networks. The switches can be used almost anywhere due to their small physical size and external power supply. Alternatively, they can be mounted in a chassis along with Allied Telesyn's media converters. This allows users to construct any mix of network conversions, with the additional option of a redundant power supply. The Missing Link feature allows the ports on the media converter to pass the "Link" status of their connections to each other. When the media converter detects a problem with one of the ports, such as the loss of connection to a node, it shuts down the connection to the other port, thus notifying the node that the connection has been lost. The value to this type of network monitoring and fault notification is that some hubs and switches can be configured to take a specific action in the event of the loss of connection on a port. In some cases, the unit can be configured to seek a redundant path to a disconnected end-node or send out a trap to a network management station alerting the network administrator of the problem. The Smart Missing Link mode is one step advance from the Missing Link mode. In SML mode, a downstream Link LED is forced to blink to indicate the link status of the local section is OK, but at the section where the physical link is down, the Link LED will be forced off. This special feature is useful in determining where the actual link is down and where the link is still good.

History Of Apple Computers

The Macintosh computer began life as the Apple I in 1976 when two friends, Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs with the aid of some friends built the first of fifty computers for the Byte Shop for $500 each. This first Apple computer came equipped with a display screen (a rarity at the time), and was the first computer with a fully assembled circuit board. Eventually, the little group made and sold two hundred Apple I for $666.66 each. With loan of $250,000 Steve Wozniak, Steve Jobs and Armas Clifford 'Mike' Markkula joined forces to form Apple Computer on April 1, 1976. By mid-1977, they had improved upon the design of the Apple I and the Apple II was made available to the public.

Ever wondered why the Company was named, Apple Computer? Simply because the trio realized that "Apple" would come before the most famous name in computers at the time, Atari. Over the years, Apple Computers continued to improve, becoming cheaper thereby making it easier for many homes to have a personal computer. Apple was the first computer company to use GUI (Graphical User Interface) in their machines; a concept that was to revolutionize the computer industry. After many trials and errors, Apple came out with a true home computer, the Apple Macintosh or Mac in 1984.

The Apple Computer was the beginning of desktop publishing era. Apple revolutionized publishing with its magic combination of a PC, it's LaserWriter printer and specialized software, Aldus PageMaker and MacPublisher. Aldus is now Adobe PageMaker. These components allowed the designing and printing of documents complete with text and graphics. It is for this reason that the Macintosh is still a favorite among the graphic design crowd.

Apple faced stiff competition from Microsoft, especially in relation to the cost of PC-clones. Apple's popularity waned and the home PC market was taken over by Bill Gates' Microsoft. However, there are still many different lines of Macs on the market today: the iMac and Power Mac being two of the most popular.

Know the Ethics and Learn Computer Hacking

Internet has become a bandwagon of entertainment, education and business. It beats tradition mediums in terms of the benefits it offers. But unfortunately there is much scope of anonymity/privacy on the web and helps the cyber terrorists prey up on the internet resources. That's why, it is encouraged to learn computer hacking to counter the actions of unethical hackers (also known as black hats).

Hacking is a fraudulent act that is illegal in some ways and helpful in others. It is to know the programmable systems and how they work in a network. An ethical hacker shows the downfalls in the security system of an organization so they can improve it. Today hacking has become an art and very popular that hackers have formed groups and even have conferences together to share their knowledge. Hacking for whatever the purpose, good or bad, requires knowledge and much programming skills. An intelligent programmer can be a good ethical/unethical hacker. These days "hacker" is being used as a term for expert, intelligent and creative people. Let's discuss how to learn computer hacking:

10 Tips to Learn Computer Hacking

As told before, professional hackers are generally more intelligent than any average programmer. So becoming a hacker depends a lot on one's intelligence and efforts. However, the following tips will help you learn computer hacking in a systematically.

1. Be curious: Curiosity is the mother of hacking. Look under the hood. Take things apart. Know the details of your system directories, file systems, system files. Look inside your computer.

2. Read a lot: Buy lots of books, go through the tutorials. Read the help files on your system. If you are using Linux/Unix read the man files.

3. Experiment: Take precautions and experiment whatever you read. Apply to work the idea that just hit your mind. Don't be afraid to change things. Doing this for a long time will give you much idea on the computer hardware and the operating system. Try using command options and switches. Tweak the registry and see what happens. Change settings in .INI files. In Linux/Unix, visit the directories where you normally don't need to go.

4. Make backups: If you start mucking around with system files, registries, password files, and such, you will eventually destroy your system. Have a backup ready. If you can afford it, have a system you use just for experimenting, ready to reload on a moment's notice, and do your serious work (or serious gaming!) on a different computer.

5. Think out of box: Hacking is not restricted to computers only. You can try trick on other networks also like mobile, telephone, etc.

6. Get some real tools: You can find numerous hacking tools on the net. Though some serious tools are not available for free, you need to have some Hex file editors, Snoopers, Compilers and APIs. In addition you also need Scripting tools, Disk editors/formatters and Disassemblers.

7. Learn to program: Serious ethical hackers are always very good programmers. If you want to be a hacker, you're going to learn much programming. You should also be quite familiar with the popular operating systems like Windows, Linux, Unix, OS2 etc. Of course, the choice of language depends on you. In Unix and Unix-like OS (Linux, Free BSD) Perl is very good to start with. Use VB or Java to program in Windows. Which ever platform you use, you need to learn considerable C/C++. You should know more than one language because no one language is right for every task.

8. Discuss with peers: In isolation, you can't learn anything. You need to take classes, join users groups and computer clubs. Talking to people on IRC or other chat programs proves really helpful. Share what you learn. Because to get something you have to give some.

9. Do some projects: Pick some projects and work consistently until you've finished them. Real time experience is better than reading. Build from ground zero, learn to create icons, associate it with some files, read how the search engines search, try to manipulate the programs that you use daily.

10. Use the Internet: There is no source greater than the Internet. Start with the Web. Learn how to use Boolean searches. Bookmark all those sites which you find worth visiting. Sometimes you will find useful information at the most strangest places.

Detailed Courses of Study to Learn Hacking

*Techniques: Windows Hacking, Registries Editing, Password cracks, Google hacking, Computer Forensics, Firewalls, Network Hacking, Security tools, Hacking tools, Encryption, Email tracking, Router Hacking, Email Forging, Port Scanning , MAC Address Spoofing, Proxies etc.

*Games: Hacking Simulation Games to understand the world of hacking and provides you with the opportunity to practice hacking without the danger of getting caught

10 Commandments of Ethical Hacking

1. Don't a computer to harm other people.
2. Don't interfere with other people's computer work.
3. Don't snoop around in other people's computer files.
4. Don't use a computer to steal.
5. Don't use a computer to bear false witness.
6. Don't copy or use proprietary software for which you have not paid.
7. Don't use other people's computer resources without authorization or compensation.
8. Don't appropriate other people's intellectual output.
9. Think about the social consequences of the program you are writing.
10. Always use a computer in ways that insure consideration and respect for your fellow humans.

调色盘与现代科技的碰撞

Sat, 25 Oct 2008 06:18:00 -0700

Wireless 'Rage' guitars for Wii recalled

Sat, 25 Oct 2008 09:13:28 -0700
Filed under: Nintendo Wii, Peripherals, Rhythm There are a number of maladies one usually associates with long-term guitar playing -- bloodied, mangled fingers (otherwise known as Townshend syndrome), horrible "strap burn" on one side of the player's neck, and, of course, an insatiable addiction to heroin. While for the most part, faux-rocking Guitar Hero and Rock Band enthusiasts are safe from these perils, a recent recall announcement of a peripheral may concern ludological guitarists about

Shopping online is practical when it comes time to upgrade your computer or find parts that need to be replaced. It has also become a more convenient way to shop than visiting several computer supply stores in your local area or in the nearest big city.

The good news is you don't have to leave your home to find products and services that you need. In your leisure time, you can stay in your home and find bargains on your computer. Free time at work is also an opportune time to browse and surf to find the computer supplies you need.

Shopping for Discount Supplies

There are a variety of websites now that offer an extensive choice of products. Instead of driving to several different stores to compare products and prices you can now do it with the touch of the mouse. Whether you are shopping for one product or need several, home shopping will bring to light the best bargains available. As competition increases, there are many sites that offer discount prices - and you win!

Start Shopping

It is simple to find computer products or brands that you are seeking. At the search engine of your choice, type in the key words for your computer merchandise using the type or name brand of the computer or part you need. Then, you just choose the website you want to inspect and take your time reviewing the products they offer.

While you are looking for discount computer supplies and accessories, you can also shop for additional products. Many sites are like a department store and have a variety of discount products for you to choose from. An online mall is a great place to shop for assorted merchandise. You will be able to find any computer supplies that you may need including hard drives, CPUs, modems, scanners, monitors and many other necessities.

Shop for Other Discounts

While you are on these sites, you can also shop for other wares. The selection is unlimited! At the same time you're shopping for discount computer supplies, you can also find discounts on sporting goods, tools, pet supplies, electronics, candles and auto parts. While you are looking for your supplies, you can often find great gifts and things that your family would like.

It is often more economical to order multiple products from one site. This way you have combined postage instead of paying individual rates. It is best to check shipping costs on each site to find the best possible rate. Remember to include the shipping costs in your overall expense.

Compare Discounts

When you are shopping for discount computer supplies, be sure of the product you want to buy. Check to see if there is a picture or a detailed description so you will know what you are getting. Check different online catalogs to compare products, quality, and prices. You can even make a wish list on your favorite sites and watch for sales on these items.

Become an Online Shopper

Find the products and supplies you need at discount prices online. This can save you a lot of time and money. Take advantage of the abundance of sites and opportunities to find everything you need. You may never want to fight the traffic or crowds again after you have tried shopping at home.

"Parenting Tip: 7 Ways to Complement Computer Games and Unleash Your Child?s Creative Genius"

Copyright 2006 Paul Arinaga

Even though we may enjoy playing them ourselves, many parents worry about the impact of computer games on their child?s development. We fear that letting our kids play computer games for more than an hour or so per day will turn them into anti-social, obese couch potatoes. It would be better to have our children read or to read child stories to them, we think. Yet, computer games are here to stay, so rather than fighting them, why not use them? This article shows you how you can let your child play computer games yet still foster the development of their creativity.

The issue that many parents have with computer games is that, compared with reading a child story, they don?t require the use of a great deal of imagination. Here are seven ways in which you can complement computer games to foster the development of your child?s creativity:

#1 Develop character profiles

Some computer games have characters. With the Harry Potter games these characters are already well-known and well-developed. With other games, however, the characters may be more ?shallow?. This is a perfect opportunity for your child to develop the characters further. They can invent a profile for the character, imagining who their family is, where they come from, where they go/went to school, what hobbies they like to do, how they feel, etc. Your child can then make sketches or drawings of the character and scenes from their life: past, present and future. Finally, your child can create profiles of the other people in the character?s life: friends, family, pets, colleagues, droids, etc.

#2 Create Storyboards

If you think about it, a lot of computer games are nothing more than interactive stories. So, your child can create their own stories using the characters from their favorite computer games. Think of this as an extension of the computer game. You could even pretend that you work for the computer game company and are creating a new version of the computer game.

There are several ways you can approach this depending upon you and your child?s preferences. You can write a script, create cartoon-like illustrations, create illustrated scenes (i.e. pictures) only, or create pictures with accompanying text.

#3 Write a Diary

It could be interesting for your child to get inside the head of some of the characters. Incidentally, this is also a good way to develop a child?s empathy. Have your child write a diary as if they were one of the characters.

#4 Develop a Virtual World

One of my sons has developed his own virtual world. He?s created detailed maps, descriptions of all the creatures, plants (more than 100 in all, fully illustrated) and lands in it, and a complete history of this imaginary world. Your child can create a virtual world that is either an extension from an existing computer game or something completely new.

#5 What?s Cooking?

If your child likes to cook, why not develop some special recipes of what people eat in the computer game?s virtual world? What?s their favorite food? What is the national dish? These ?recipes? could be from real, edible foods or other non-edible materials (make sure your kid doesn?t eat the latter!).

#6 Get Hands On

Some children are kinesthetic learners; they learn by doing. If your child is one of these, they can create 3D models from clay or papier m?ch? of the characters from a computer game. You can even create life-sized models in your garden/backyard. For example, you can carve a character from an old tree stump or log.

#7 Create Your Own Computer Game

In the area of computer games, what could be more creative than creating your own game? When they create a game, computer game companies go through a process similar to some of the steps described here so you might be able to use the results of your fun work to create an actual computer game.

There are hundreds or thousands of software tools you can use to create your own games. However, unless you?re a ?techie?, it?s probably easiest to use one that doesn?t require any programming or advanced computer skills.

Software tools such as ?The 3D Gamemaker?,* for example, allow you to create games simply by pointing and clicking. The 3D Gamemaker has a library of scenes, sounds and 3D objects that you can combine into your own games. Obviously, this is a bit less creative then making a game from scratch, but you can also scan in your own images, record your own personal sound effects and import your own 3D models to make your game more original.

The Multi-Choice Creation System (MuCeS) lets you create Multichoice adventures in which the game player chooses one option out of a number of given options depending on what she thinks will be best for a given situation.

The above are only two examples of the possibilities. The point is that you don?t need to be a ?rocket scientist? in order to create your own computer games. Imagine how thrilled your kids will be to create their own games. Playing computer games will never be the same again!

Conclusion

Some parents regard computer games as an ?unhealthy? influence on their children, but when you combine computer games with some of the ?offline? child story creation activities described here, you?ll not only unleash your child?s creative genius, you?ll have a lot of fun doing it.
